“Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, ‘Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it?”
—James 2:15–16
Mission Norman is a non-profit organization that is supported solely by volunteers and charitable individuals. Mission Norman receives no government aid.
Mission Norman's goal is to spread Christ's love to Central Oklahoma through works of service and love. To accomplish this goal, Mission Norman works through two different branches: its Bible studies on the housing sites and its food pantry. Both are important part of Mission Norman.
Mission Norman does not only minister to people that come to the office, but it goes out to minister to the people. According to the North American Mission Board, over 95 percent of people in multi-housing communities are un-reached by the church. Mission Norman could not ignore this, so it decided that it would go to the people.
Mission Norman runs about 16 Bible studies at different apartments and mobile homes. Dedicated volunteers run the Bible studies and minister to the people in the apartments and mobile homes. Not only do they take the gospel to places that it has not gone before, they host community events and offer a helping to hand. Some of the people in these communities would not have anyone else to care about them without the Mission Norman volunteers.
“People just got to eat,” said Gene Barnes, Mission Norman's director and founder. That is why Mission Norman expanded to include a food pantry. It is difficult to tell people “Jesus loves you” if you do not love them yourself.
The food pantry provides food once every 30 days to needy individuals and families. The food pantry supplies enough food for about one week.
The food pantry accepts and distributes many things other than food. Mission Norman accepts donations of clothes, toiletries, furniture, dishes, and most anything else. Mission Norman has even accepted and given away a car. Anything that is donated to Mission Norman will be used to bring glory to GOD.
